The Escola Sao Paulo Independent Program - PIESP – is a one-year program aimed at young artists or those who are beginning their career. Conceptualized and created by curator Adriano Pedrosa, the PIESP will promote meetings between artists and leading Brazilian artists and curators to discuss the development of their artistic projects and languages.
The program structure and content is the following:
1. Critical seminar, on Tuesdays, from 7PM to 10PM starting March 2010. The meetings with the whole group of artists will be held once a week and will be conducted by director Adriano Pedrosa during the first term. The second term will be conducted by one of the three resident interlocutors, and in 2010 it will Ivo Mesquita. The seminar follons the structure of the crit class, common in art schools in the United States and Europe, but non-existent in Brazil. Each week one of the artists will present his/her work to the rest of the group that will discuss it deeply, questioning formal, conceptual and aesthetic decisions. The critic seminar will give artists the opportunity to elaborate and strengthen their critical and discursive positioning, questioning and developing their language and work through debate with colleagues, oriented by the seminar’s interlocutor.
2. Individual meetings with interlocutors. Time to be scheduled.
Young artists will have individual meetings with all the program interlocutors to discuss their work and projects. Each individual meeting has a 45-minute duration and takes place at Escola Sao Paulo. During this meeting the artist will show his/her work and projects, and will establish a direct connection with the most important Brazilian artists and curators. There will be 16 individual meetings per term, divided as follows:
A – Meetings with resident interlocutors
Two individual meetings with each interlocutor each term, totaling 8 meetings per term and 16 meetings per year. The first meeting takes place during the first two months of the term and the second on the two subsequent months, enabling the artist to develop his/her project or work during this period of time. Scheduling of the meetings is done through the school educational coordinator. Resident interlocutors: Adriano Pedrosa (director), Ivo Mesquita, Marcos Moraes and Rodrigo Moura.
B – Meetings with visiting interlocutors
Two individual meetings with each one of the 8 visiting interlocutors, every year, totaling 16 individual meetings. The resident interlocutors are divided into two groups: four visiting interlocutor every two terms. Each term the visiting interlocutors meet twice with the each artist. Meetings are scheduled through the school educational coordinator. Visiting interlocutors: Ana Paula Cohen, Beatriz Milhazes, Leda Catunda, Carla Zaccagnini, Ernesto Neto, Julieta González, Rivane Neunschwander and Rosângela Rennó.
3. Lectures. Dates and time to be scheduled.
As a complement to the seminars and individual meetings, each one of the 12 interlocutors will give a lecture per year about aspects of his/her work. – artistic, curatorial, or critical. Lectures take 2-3 hours and are given at the School during the evenings.
