Mostra Matthew Barney Escola São Paulo
“Mostra Matthew Barney Escola São Paulo” is a unique opportunity to present the general public, and not only art students or those who attend Escola São Paulo, a provocation related to this multimedia artist. Its goal is to promote an instant of contact with the various possibilities of this artists’ vast and relevant production. Matthew Barney may be considered one this generation’s most brilliant artist.
The selection focuses in works that, in a sparse way, comprehend the time period of 1994 until 2007. Multiple perspectives, experimentations and hybridism may be seen, taken this point into account, which implies that not only the various languages and supports may be found, but also the main concerns of this artist’s work.
The exhibition is composed by Loughton Head, 1994, a representative of his Cremaster Cycle, developed by Barney from 1994 to 2002, in which he explores, through photographies, objects, drawings and movies, the human body and it’s potentiality, the spaces and the matters, in search of a “personal and contemporary mythology”. The Cycle can be perceived as the creator’s / interpreter’s odyssey throughout the vast unexplored territories of a contemporary geography, in which discussions concerning life and death, sexuality and reproduction, body and machine appear at all times, among so many other.
Cunha de Ogum and Hoist – movie that is part of the Destricted series – both of 2004, as well as the vestment, developed by Matthew Barney for De Lama Lâmina, are part of a work ensemble made in Salvador, Bahia, with Arto Lindsay as his work partner. This compound brings references of the local culture and tradition, mixed with sexual, political, ecological and mythological aspects of Bahia’s carnival.
Nisshin Maru, of 2007, is a collection of 8 photogravures along with their box, developed and designed by the artist. It is the most recent piece of his work in the exhibition and is also part of the twenty yearlong project Drawing Restraint. The whole concept here is that form itself occurs as a result of the struggle against the resistance of matter. Nisshin Maru is particularly related to Drawing Restaint 9.
This exhibition is part of the school’s widest project, which holds as an ideal that culture and education should always walk alongside, together. That is also the reason why other activities will occur during the exhibition: widen the exhibitional dimension. Matthew Barney: No Restaint, 2006, directed by Alison Chernick, will also be shown with guided visits, that will give the particular audience the chance to take part of an exercise to enhance their view. The schedule reaches its end with a lecture whose purpose is to establish connection points in the relation “art and technology”. This may also be considered a major link with the next exhibition of the “Encontro com Arte” series, which starts in April and deepens the relation mentioned before.
